- Born in Emden, Bakhuizen moved to Amsterdam in 1650 and studied under Allart van Everdingen. He entered the Amsterdam Guild of Saint Luke in 1663. Bakhuizen became one of the most successful Dutch marine painters of his day and ran a large studio of assistants. In Sea Piece with Shipping, two sailing boats are pictured in the left foreground: a wijdschip with a white flag with ‘C…’ and tricolour stripes above and below, and immediately behind, a kaag with a red and white ensign bearing the initials LB. The view is comparable to a smaller picture, dated 1697, in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam which suggests a similar late date.
