  • Little is known about this artist’s early life, except that he visited Switzerland several times between 1653 and 1656, where he made topographical drawings. By 1658, Hackaert was in Amsterdam, where he specialized in Italianate views. In this painting the distant mountains recall the artist’s travels in Switzerland, while the figures, which were previously attributed to the painter Johannes Lingelbach, are now believed to have been painted by Hackaert himself.
