  • This picture shows a 'smalschip', a boat designed for inland waterways, flying a grey flag and moving towards a large ship under full sail, which carries a Dutch flag at the main. The generally dark tonality and painting of the boats recalls Bakhuizen’s work of the 1660s, while the treatment of the sea and sky is more reminiscent of the works of Willem van de Velde the Younger. This has led some scholars to suggest an attribution to Jan Claesz Rietschoof (1652-1719), a gifted follower of Bakhuizen, who worked both with Bakhuizen and the young Van de Velde in the mid to late 1660s.
