  • Greatly admired in the nineteenth century by Dr Waagen for their ‘great warmth, transparency, and admirable lighting’ this picture, with P253, resembles in composition Cuyp’s Landscape (Washington, Corcoran Gallery) and Two Shepherds in a Hilly Landscape (private collection). The rather crude figures and sheep suggest, however, that they may be by a pupil. The 3rd Marquess of Hertford applied Louis XV style frames with artists’ trophies to these paintings.
