  • Exhibited at the 1839 Salon, this was Decamps’s first religious scene in oil. Pharoah’s daughter, accompanied by her attendants, discovers Moses in an ark of bulrushes on a bank of the Nile. He had been placed in the ark by his mother to escape Pharaoh’s orders to kill newborn Israelite boys (Exodus II, 1-9). The subject is one of the most frequently depicted in religious art.
