- There is a larger version, signed and dated 1857, in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Although the subject is traditional (cf. Willem van Mieris, 'Children’s Games', P178) - showing the Romantic theme of the child as father of the man - it also had much contemporary relevance when it was painted shortly after the ending of the Crimean War (1853-6).
