  • The figures wear early seventeenth-century costume. The enthusiasm for scenes from early modern history which had been such a feature of the art of many younger artists in the 1820s (as an alternative to classicism) had waned considerably by 1851 when this picture was painted. The subject, historical but generalized rather than a specific event, recalls the lithographs in Baron Taylor's 'Voyages pittoreques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France' (1820-78), to which Isabey contributed, and similar scenes painted much earlier by Isabey's friend Bonington (e.g. Bonington, 'A Venetian Scene' (P674), and 'The Great Staircase of a French Château', P696)
