  • French cuirassiers (heavy cavalrymen) capture a standard from Russian infantry. Dated c.1822-3 by Eitner and Grunchec (though regarded unconvincingly by Bazin as a very early work). Gericault first made his name with two military scenes exhibited at the Paris Salon - 'The Charging Hussar' (1812; Paris, Louvre) and 'The Wounded Cuirassier' (1814; Paris, Louvre). Although the Wallace Collection's picture was painted after the death of Napoleon, there was still in the 1820s a considerable market for scenes of Napoleon's battles.
