  • Painted shortly after Vernet’s appointment as Director of the French Academy in Rome (an institution which he later proposed should be abolished). Scenes of Italian popular life were frequently painted by French and other artists visiting Rome in the early nineteenth century (see, for example, Papety, 'An Italian Peasant Girl', and Vernet, 'The Brigand Betrayed', P577). A comparable subject, which Vernet may have known, was etched by Bartolomeo Pinelli in 1816.
