  • Napoleon, wearing the green coat of the chasseurs à cheval that he often wore on campaign, is shown here with his staff officers. It is difficult to identify the officers, but it is known from Meissonier's surviving account book, that they include Marshals Berthier, Duroc, Caulaincourt, Ney and Drouot. In the background, we see the red and white headdress of Roustam Raza, Napoleon’s attendant. This detail is said to have been added by Meissonier at the request of the 4th Marquess of Hertford who was very knowledgeable about the life and times of Napoleon. The painting is one of the few known to have been bought by Lord Herford direct from the artist.
