  • Gros first met Napoleon in Milan in 1796 when he painted a study from life which became the basis for his painting 'Bonaparte on the Bridge at Arcole' (Château de Versailles), shown at the Paris Salon of 1801. Its success ensured that Gros was asked to paint at least seven other portraits of Napoleon who detested having his portrait painted and after his early campaigns refused to sit to artists. The Wallace Collection’s picture shows Bonaparte wearing the green coat of the chasseurs à cheval, a uniform which he particularly favoured when he was on campaign. He is accompanied by a staff officer and two hussars. The sketch is related to the large equestrian portrait of Napoleon after the battle of Marengo (Musée National du Château, Rueil-Malmaison) of 1803.
