  • According to the catalogue of a sale in 1850 which included this painting, Amsterdam is represented in the misty distance. The composition recalls seventeenth-century Dutch paintings, but also the river scenes popularised in the 1820s by Bonington and his contemporaries (cf. Bonington, 'On the Seine near Mantes', P339). The Wallace Collection's picture was painted in the year before Nuyen's early death at the age of twenty six.
