  • Probably a study from nature painted during Marilhat’s visit to the Middle East in 1831-3. The late eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries were the high watermark of small open air sketches from nature such as this. Most were retained by artists for study and for their own pleasure and only came on the market after the artists' death (if they were not retained by the family). This was an unusual acquistion for the 4th Marquess of Hertford.
