  • Félix Massue (1811-69) had a distinguished military career, rising through the ranks to become a general in 1868. He served in North Africa 1836-52 and in Italy in 1859. At the time of Meissonier’s portrait he was Colonel of the Dragons de l’Impératrice. The inscription on the painting indicates that he was on friendly terms with Meissonier, and he may have known the 4th Marquess of Hertford through his duties with the Imperial Guard. Meissonier painted very few portraits.
