- Probably painted c.1825 and one of Bonington’s earliest figure paintings in oil. The subject is taken from Shakespeare’s comedy 'The Merry Wives of Windsor', I, i. Slender, a foolish suitor for the hand of Anne Page, stands before her father’s house, reluctant to enter despite her invitation. Scenes from Shakespeare were popular in English painting of the early nineteenth century, and this was probably painted about the time of Bonington's first return visit to London. The poses and costumes of the figures are derived from illustrations in Joseph Strutt’s 'A Complete View of the Dress and Habits of the People of England', 1796-9.
