  • Mantes is in the department of Seine-et-Oise, twenty-eight miles north-west of Paris. This is an evening scene looking west along the river. In the distance can be seen the twin towers of the Collégiale Notre-Dame and the fourteenth-century tower of Saint-Maclou. Bonington’s friend Charles Rivet, with whom he visited northern Italy in 1826, owned a château near Mantes which Bonington visited frequently. The basic composition is characteristic of numerous English oils and watercolours in the picturesque tradition.
