  • The identification of the site is traditional. Beni Suef, on the Nile, is seventy miles south of Cairo. Marilhat, who visited the Middle East in 1831-3, was a pioneer of naturalistic Orientalist scenes such as this (cf. Marilhat, 'On the Banks of the Nile', P293).
