- The costumes resemble those of the early seventeenth-century fashion, though the appeal of picnicking and walks by the seaside is much more characteristic of the nineteenth century. Isabey visited Belgium and Holland in 1846, and the subject of this painting was probably inspired by the sands of Scheveningen or another similar costal resort.
