- In 1856 Bonheur made a triumphant tour of England and Scotland at the invitation of the dealer Ernest Gambart. This painting is probably derived from notes taken during her visit to the Scottish Highlands, where she was profoundly impressed by the beauty and historical associations of the landscape.
