  • Ziem painted innumerable views of Venice, a city he first visited in 1842, and where he acquired a studio. The picture was probably painted c.1865. The buildings include, on the left, the Dogana and the church of Santa Maria della Salute and, on the right, the Campanile and the Doge’s Palace. The central fishing boat flies the Austrian flag. Apart from during an insurrection of 1848-9, Venice was under Austrian rule 1815-66.
