  • The subject is taken from Byron’s poem 'The Corsair' (1814), I, vi, 13-17. Byron, with Walter Scott, was the most popular source in contemporary British literature for younger French painters in the 1820s (see also Delacroix, 'The Execution of the Doge Marino Falieo', P282). Conrad, a pirate chief in the Aegean Sea, notorious for his violent character, is approached nervously by two of his men. The picture demonstrates Vernet's early style when he used more heavily impasted paint than he did late in his career.
