  • The birds have been identified as golden pheasants. Painted in or before 1855, the year in which the comte de Pourtalès-Gorgier died. It was at the sale of his collection that the picture was bought by Lord Hertford. Fauvelet was a lithographer and a painter principally of still life and historical genre scenes in the manner of Meissonier who exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1845 to 1870.
