  • The elegant city dwellers on the right are accompanied by village musicians. The setting is Italianate, referring to sixteenth-century pastorals (scenes of ideal, Southern country life). Pater painted the work in the late 1720s, when his style became more independent from Watteau's and his palette became much lighter. The embracing couple in the right mid-distance were revealed during cleaning in 1965-6, and had probably been painted out for reasons of modesty in the early nineteenth century. A very similar composition by Pater was sold in New York (Sotheby's, 29 May 2003, lot 61).
