  • The painting was probably exhibited in the 1757 Salon under the title 'Le matelot napolitain (The Neapolitain Matelot)'. Later it entered the collection of Louis XV's mistress, Madame du Barry, and was described in her 1777 sale catalogue. It then joined the collection of Charles-Nicolas Duclos-Dufresnoy where it was paired with the later 'Innocence' (P384). A preparatory drawing was sold at Christie's, Paris on 21 March 2001. Schultz engraved the composition in 1779, and many copies attest to its popularity.
