  • "Les Plaisirs du bal" (London, Dulwich Picture Gallery) was one of Watteau's most successful and most widely copied compositions. P420 is one of several copies produced by Pater. One of them was mentioned as being in the artist's studio at the time of his death in 1736. Watteau's painting was widely copied by other, unidentified artists as well, but this painting is the only one of these old copies that can confidently be attributed to Pater because of its style. The copies follow the actual colours of Watteau's work and must have been made - directly or indirectly - after Watteau's original and not after the print by Gérard Scotin of 1731.
