  • The painting is a major example of Pater' Fêtes galantes. The overall composition is based on Watteau's "Les Champs Elisées" (P389) that was engraved in 1727. The main group on the right had been developed by Pater earlier and reappears in several painting. The background features Italianate and Flemish elements, a combination that is not uncommon for the ideal pastoral settings of the Fêtes galantes. The painting's style is typical for Pater's work in the early 1730s. It was sold to Lord Hertford for 29,000 francs (about £1,160), a record price for Pater at the time.
