- The painting is a good and typical example of Fragonard's essays in the style of other schools or painters, in this case Dutch works. It is reminiscent of Rembrandt in its palette and handling, and of ter Borch and Metsu in its subject, The figure is comparable to contemporary works depicting more or less studious children by Greuze, Lépicié and Chardin, reflecting the new and strong interest in childhood at the period. In its freedom of execution, the picture may be compared to his earlier figures of fantasy, such as the Portrait of a Singer (c.1769; Paris, Louvre). The painting is one of the relatively few signed works by Fragonard, dateable to the mid-1770s.
