  • A work recalling both the eighteenth-century fascination with the fair, typified by characters such as the female quack-doctor and the commedia dell’arte actor in the role of Pierrot, and seventeenth-century Dutch Italianate harbour scenes (cf. Berchem P25 and Jan Baptiste Weenix P117). Demarne exhibited a similar subject at the Paris Salon of 1804, and the present picture may be dated to the same period. ‘The Elixir’ featured in the sale of the comte de Nappe, who began to collect the artist’s works in 1789 and described Demarne as the ‘Voltaire of Painting’ in his ‘Éloge’ of the artist, published in 1817.
