  • The base of the Campanile is seen on the left with the church of San Geminiano (demolished 1807) at the end of the Piazza and the Loggetta on the left. The picture’s elongated proportions suggest that it may have been conceived as an overdoor. Comparison with another version at Woburn Abbey suggests that 10 cm may have been cut from the top edge. The 1870 Hertford House inventory describes the work as ‘Beckford’s’, although there is no such picture listed in any of the sales of the collector and novelist William Beckford.
