  • As described in Saint Luke's Gospel (I, 26-38), the Angel Gabriel tells Mary she is to bear Jesus, the Son of God (cf. Champaigne P134, Cicognara P536 and Murillo P68). Mary’s gesture of blessing, with the two fingers of her left hand raised, is unusual in depictions of this subject. The painting recalls the work of Perugino and Pinturichio, but is too damaged and poorly executed to be securely attributed.
