- François Ier (1494-1547), King of France 1515-47, was noted for his patronage of the arts. The present portrait is a weak copy of a type thought to derive from a drawing formerly attributed to Jean Clouet and now attributed to Joos van Cleve (Chantilly, Musée Condé). Finer versions of the same composition are at Windsor Castle and the Philadelphia Museum of Arts. The picture was purchased as a work by Holbein (q.v.) by the 3rd Marquess of Hertford, who had a taste for historical portraits. It seems to have been the only inherited picture that the 4th Marquess of Hertford kept with him in Paris and was listed in his posthumous inventory as a work of Lucas van Leyden.
