  • Cesura was associated with the school of Raphael early in his career and the present composition is clearly influenced by Raphael’s 'Madonna of the Rose' (Madrid, Prado) and Perino del Vaga’s 'Holy Family'. The sweet facial expressions, bright colours and elegant, elongated forms, however, also recall the Italian mannerists, Correggio and Parmigianino. The painting must have enjoyed some popularity in its day, for it was reproduced twice in print by Orazio de Sanctis in 1573 and again by an anonymous engraver in a print published by Giacomo Rossi.
