  • A typical example of Sassoferrato’s small-scale pictures of the Virgin, this composition is a rectangular version of the same composition as in the other painting by Sassoferrato hanging on the same wall. A comparison of the two works demonstrates the consistently high quality of Sassoferrato’s repetitions.

    This picture may have been acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford as a superior example of the subject, to be kept with him in his Parisian collection, rather than in London.
