- The figures wear seventeenth-century costume, the boats fly Dutch flags and the painting is very evocative of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. Painted at Seaton House, Old Aberdeen, the home of Gudin’s father-in-law, General Sir James Hay.In 1844 Gudin had married Louise Margaret Hay (1820-90), grand-daughter of the 7th Marquess of Tweeddale.
