  • Probably exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1837. The soldiers are grenadiers de la ligne and the woman is identifiable by her pans and water barrel as a cantinière (canteen woman). The composition recalls seventeenth-century Dutch scenes of people and animals crossing rivers.
