- Apparently a recollection of Vernet’s first visit to Algeria, as it was called 'Hunt in the Sahara Desert 28 May 1833' when exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1839. Earlier works with a similar subject by, among others, Leonardo and Rubens would have been familiar to Vernet. Delacroix was one of his contemporaries who also tackled the subject.
