  • The Bashi-Bazouks were irregular Turkish mounted troops notorious for their ferocity and ill-discipline. Vernet encountered them when he visited the Crimea (1854-5) at the time of the Crimean War. Their fondness for looting is suggested in this painting by the broken Iznik plate in the right foreground, the open book by a fire on which a coffee pot simmers and the gold coins on a green cloth.
