  • Charles-Joseph, Prince de Ligne (1735-1814) was a distinguished officer in the Austrian army. He was also an accomplished courtier, a noted wit and the author of extensive memoirs. The present picture is a sketch from life for a portrait by Grassi, signed and dated 1790 (London, private collection). He wears the cross of the Order of Maria Theresa, which he was awarded in 1789.
The painting was acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford at an unknown date. It was wrongly attributed to Gainsborough in an inventory drawn up after the death of the Marquess.
