- On a visit to the Wallace Collection in 1913, after complaining that this picture had been hung ‘abominably’, Sant identified the model as his sister Julia (1835-67, later Mrs William Cockburn) when aged ‘sixteen or eighteen’. The date of the painting would therefore be c.1851-3. Not surprisingly, no other artist or craftsman is known to have visited the Wallace Collection as a museum and commented on his or her work.
