- Exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1844. Saint Hilarion (c.291-371) was a hermit who founded many monasteries in Palestine. He was a follower of Saint Anthony Abbot (see Delaroche, The Temptation of Saint Anthony', P311), and like him endured many temptations by Satan. Sexual temptation is the theme of several paintings by Papety. An icon visible in the cave demonstrates his unusual interest in art of Byzantine origin, even before he visited Greece for the first time in 1846.
