  • This painting, with its pendant 'Duck Shooting', P608, was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1824. Both pictures recall the manner of Vernet’s father, Carle who was much influenced by English sporting prints and paintings and Vernet himself was an admirer of British art and literature. His paternal grandmother, the wife of the painter Claude-Joseph Vernet, was the daughter of an Irish Catholic living in Rome.
