  • The painting was one of a set of four overdoors (with P625, P627 and P631) commissioned by the Intendant des Finances and director of the Département des Ponts et Chaussées, Daniel-Charles Trudaine for his château at Montigny-Lencoup, near Melun, which later became a hunting lodge for Louis XV (cf. Boucher P482 and P489). P627 was painted in 1747, the other three paintings of the set in the following year. Their uneven quality, reflecting their position as overdoors, suggests that Oudry’s workshop including his son Jacques-Charles may have helped with their execution, although preparatory drawings confirm that the designs were by his father. Jean-Baptiste considered them important works as he chose to exhibit them at the 1748 Salon. An early study of 1746 for the painting is in the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, a compositional drawing of 1748 in a private collection.
