  • Although modest in scale, Berchem’s painting of The Musical Shepherdress is one of his most charming. In an idyllic Arcadian landscape, a group of shepherdesses watch their dancing colleague, while to the right the vista stretches into the hazy distance with plains and mountains. The exquisite surface of the picture is due to the use of copper as a support, which enabled Berchem to achieve a much higher degree of finish than when using canvas.
