  • Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), military commander; First Consul 1799-1804; Emperor of the French 1804-14, 1815. There is a dead British infantryman in the foreground. The pose, costume and gesture of Napoleon are characteristic of many popular images of the Emperor produced for propagandist reasons in the 1830s, when there was a revival of Bonapartist political influence. Cf. Bellangé P683.
