  • Lyon, the birthplace of Saint-Jean, had a major school of flower and still-life painting in the nineteenth century. Saint-Jean won a European reputation for his flower pieces, scrupulously painted in season and from nature. The arrangement in this picture includes grapes, peaches and plums (in the bronze vase) and gourd, orange, pomegranate and pumpkin on the chest. This is one of the few paintings known to have been bought direct from the artist by the 4th Marquess of Hertford. See also Saint-Jean, 'Flowers and Grapes', P760.
