  • Christ is shown here crucified between two thieves: the good thief on Christ’s right, who asked Christ to remember him, and the bad thief, on Christ's left, who abused Christ. This ivory, which was once partly pigmented, is remarkable for the expressive naturalism and sculptural depth of the main figures. One of the greatest Gothic ivories to survive, it was formerly the central piece of a triptych or retable as evidenced by the remains of hinges on either side.
