- Francis Charles Seymore Conway, the 3rd Marquess of Hertford (1777 – 1842) was in his middle forties when his portrait was painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence. He had bright red hair and, when he was Lord Yarmouth, was nick-named ‘Red Herrings’ after the fishing town of Yarmouth in Norfolk. The painting of the Marquess by Lawrence originally hung in his villa, St. Dunstan’s in Regents Park, which was demolished in 1936.
The 3rd Marquess was the first of the Hertford family for whom collecting works of art was a deeply important activity. One of his most significant acquisitions was his purchase, in 1815, of Titian’s Perseus and Andromeda (P11). On 22 November 1822, he was created a Knight of the Garter, the insignia of which he can be seen wearing in this painting.
